Summer Studies 2017

What Are They?

Summer Studies are book studies led by various members of our congregation. Groups will meet seven times over the course of the summer to discuss the content of the book, working to apply it to their own life.

When Are They?

Summer studies run weekly between June 12th and July 31st with a break over the week of July 4th. The first meeting is a welcome meeting with no required reading, it’s just a time for the groups to meet one another and discuss goals for the summer.

What Do I Need to Do?

Join a group in three easy steps. Step 1: Pick a group. Step 2: Using the contact info in a church bulletin or at the Info Desk, contact a group leader to let them know you are planning on joining. Step 3: Purchase your book (all the books are available on Amazon, let us know if you need help).

Odds and Ends:

If your community group leader is a leader of a summer study group, you are welcome to join their group, but you don’t have to. We would love it if these book studies provide an opportunity to meet new people from new groups. While there is no formalized child care program during summer studies, most groups are prepared to let kids come and play outside so long as they are able to be respectful of others. A leader will be able to answer more questions regarding the specifics of their plan for kids.

Book: Practicing Affirmation by Sam Crabtree

Practicing Affirmation sounds a call to recognize and affirm the character of Christ in others. When done well, affirmation does not fuel pride in the person, but refreshes them and honors God. All who are discouraged in relationships will find wisdom and practical insight in this book.

Book: Counterfeit God’s by Timothy Keller

“Harsh economic realities are casting new light on the pursuits of sex, money, and success for happiness: careers, fortunes, marriages, and retirement security have collapsed. Many feel lost, disenchanted, and resentful. In this inspiring new book, Timothy Keller, one of the country's most popular spiritual guides, reveals the unvarnished truth about faith, our hearts' desires, and the pursuit of happiness-and where all of it can ultimately be found.”

Book: Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper

"God created us to live with a single passion to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives. Most people slip by in life without a passion for God, spending their lives on trivial diversions, living for comfort and pleasure, and perhaps trying to avoid sin. This book will warn you not to get caught up in a life that counts for nothing. It will challenge you to live and die boasting in the cross of Christ and making the glory of God your singular passion. If you believe that to live is Christ and to die is gain, read this book, learn to live for Christ, and don't waste your life!”

Book: Rejoicing in Christ by Michael Reeves

“If we want to know who God is, the best thing we can do is look at Christ. If we want to live the life to which God calls us, we look to Christ. In Jesus we see the true meaning of the love, power, wisdom, justice, peace, care and majesty of God. Michael Reeves, author of Delighting in the Trinity, opens to readers the glory and wonder of Christ, offering a bigger and more exciting picture than many have imagined. Jesus didn't just bring us the good news. He is the good news. Reeves helps us celebrate who Christ is, his work on earth, his death and resurrection, his anticipated return and how we share in his life.”

Book: The Hole in Our Holiness by Kevin DeYoung

What does it mean to be holy? Why should we care? And how can we change? The hole in our holiness is that we don’t care much about holiness. Or, at the very least, we don’t understand it. This is a book for those of us who are ready to take holiness seriously, ready to be more like Jesus, ready to live in light of the grace that produces godliness. This is a book about God’s power to help us grow in personal holiness and to enjoy the process of transformation.

In this wonderful book, historian Alister McGrath gives us a brief overview of church history by highlighting great thinkers in history past. Lewis.
